Hair Advice [message #88235] Tue, 02 February 2010 14:12 Go to next message
Anonymous  UNITED STATES

I know that many of us struggle with even HAVING hair, much less caring for it, but medications, hormones and hair transplants can take care of some of those problems.

HOW do you keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful?

I have friends with really thick, full and shiny hair, it MUST be just their genes or maybe their diet? Are their foods or supplements that are good for your hair?

My hair is thick but individual hair shafts are very fine and fragile. Some shampoos are very drying and make my hair frizzy. Changing brands of shampoos frequently seems to help a little but in the long run my hair is just dry and lifeless.

Can you recommend any hair care products or secrets for healthy hair?

Using a bit of coconut oil after your shower can help with fine dry hair. (though I do mean a LITTLE...otherwise you end up looking like a grease ball. Your hair may like it, but your sense of style wont!)

I take EPO (evening primrose oil) as a suppliment and it's good for nails, hair, skin and my cholesterol levels. Great stuff all around. (make sure it's not contraindicated against anything your currently on. YMMV)

Oh goodness no! Health food stores and some grocery chains carry it. Look in the cooking oil section. It doesn't normally have much of a smell...if you get the organic stuff or the extra virgin it doesn't have any smell. It's a solid at room temp oil, it melts with relative ease and we use it for lots and lots of things. Hair, massage oil, Twisted Evil other things.....

The Nioxin brand of shampoos and conditioners are made for thinning hair. I've used them for years, they are great products. Lots of ingredients to slow the hair from producing too much sebum, which can kill the hair follicals.
Tea tree oil, massaged into the scalp several times a week is supposed to be good for the hair too.

Most people would say I'm an expert at keeping hair beautiful and lushiouse
but those people would be lying
the truth is I have no clue why my hairs so nice
I see lots of people my age (mind you I'm young so that could be one of the reasons) with gross greasy hair or dry dead hair
all I can say is I have a terrible diet (what with anorexia an all) and I barely do anything to my hair
all I do is shampoo every day (I don't even condition anymore)
allso I've started straighting my hair when it's wet (it keeps it drier and straighter)
that basically it
maybe I'm born with good hair
I'm positive I'll never go bald with the bush I have on my head
I get it from my dad

Yes, I've used Nioxin, too. It's great. Did not know about the hair preservation part!

My hair is frizzy. Partly because it's going gray, and the gray ones just *are* frizzy, and partly because it's kind of curly and it just tends to go frizzy on the ends. Really noticeable during the last year, because little crops of hair have started up again as my T levels have gone down. It's been kind of amusing watching the little bunches of frizz move from the crown of my head on down the sides as the hair grows out ... but it's not really the way I want to look.

I've been trying for years to find a set of products that work for me, and in the last few months, I think I finally have. The Matrix Sleek Look products really do seem to help, especially the shampoo and the styling creme, and I also use l'Anza leave-in moisturizing conditioner. I think that's the one I'd keep if could only keep one. Occasionally I do work a really large glob of it into my hair, and it does go greaseball if I don't wash it again the next day. But my hair does like it - it becomes smooth and manageable for several days after.

I use the Syoss repair therapy at the moment. It seems to give my hair a nice shine.

I still haven't found the perfect fix for frizzy hair (like mine), but applying some day cream or body lotion makes it a bit greasy (don't apply too much), so that it doesn't frizz as badly. I tried the Frizz Eaze serum (extra strong), but it doesn't seem to work any better than my daycream. The only downside to this: I have to wash my hair a bit more often. The Dessange thermo-liss mask does work very well, but I find it a bit too harsh for regular use.

Vitamins do amazing things. Prenatal vitamins are awesome for hair and nail growth. Make sure to read the ingredients on all your haircare and facial products. Many of them actually have alcohol in them witch will dry you out. Stay away from anything heavily scented or super expensive as most of it is crap. Main and Tail is a great shampoo. My instructor at the beauty academy swore by it. Oh, and most importantly, if you have dry weak hair then wash it as little as humanly possible. Shampooing everyday will strip away the natural oils your hair needs. At first your hair will look and feel greasy but give it time to adjust and your hair will be much happier.

Here is what I have been told by my two hair people, both have 20 plus years in the industry.Neither knows the other, one lives in Washington near me, and the other is an old friend who lives in Texas .
One is male, one is female. They both say the same thing.
Get plenty of rest.
Drink lots of water
Eat a sensible diet.
Hair is dead the second it leaves your head.
Wash your hair as little as possible. Never wash your hair with shampoo before the big event of the week such as going out for dinner.I wash mine daily with conditioner. I mist with an oil before drying on low to medium heat and then apply an anti friz before using the flat iron. I get the look I want easily now.
I use Paul Mitchell detangler conditioner and Redken shampoo.
Eat well, sleep, well drink lots of water and go to a reputable salon and seek advice.
Tell the hair professional about you, show them what you are using and what do they recommend. When I say hair professional I don't mean going into a chain hair shop, ,see if you can find an old time hair shop, that has been around for a long time.I pay $35.00 for a cut wash and blow dry, and $70.. for highlights. Yes its expensive and it costs me a days wages to get my hair highlighted but its my indulgence in my self. If I look as good as I can and feel good I generally have a better attitude and do a better job in life.
There are as you know a gazillion products out there for hair, cheap is not always bad and expensive is not always good. Ak your hair pro what will be best, tell them you are on a budget. Everyone's hair is different. Hormones will affect your hair. Alcohol or drugs will affect your hair.
I find that the chain hair shops hire folks straight out of school, with little experience and a very flippant attitude. Most make minimum wage.
Getting your hair trimmed also every 6 weeks or so will also promote growth and fullness. I am pretty happy with my hair at the moment! Nod

So I've noticed just a couple of hours ago... Shampoo and no conditioner. My hair went "poof" as soon as I got outside. But at least I got the ends trimmed Wink

Biotin may also be helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. Biotin is often recommended for strengthening hair and nails. Consequently, it is found in many cosmetics and health products for the hair and skin, though it cannot be absorbed through the hair or skin itself.

My wife and I both use Matrix Biolage. Her hair is thin & dry, mine is thick and slightly oily. Seems to work equally well for both of us. We both use the same brand conditioner also.

I have been taking Biotin now for about two weeks.....and continuing to massage my scalp with a few drops of peppermint oil after shampooing.

My hair is noticeably healthier and I swear it's grown an inch!

I've started taking a vitamin brand called 'Hair, Skin, and Nails', which has a high amount of biotin. I also started Rogain to reverse some temporary hair thinning due to all the stress in the past year. It all seems to be working well, along with reduced stress levels. Hair is much healthier and growing again.

yeah I agree with the good diet and plenty of water. Skin/hair health comes more from the inside over the outside. I've tried a lot of different shampoos and conditioners and I got to a point where I thought screw this I'm just going to use simple organic stuff with no chemicals and added crap. I just want it to clean my hair nothing else.
Because of this I'll now also rinse my hair with apple cider vinegar diluted in water after which helps to neutralise the pH level of my hair and to close the cuticles. This helps keep the hair strong and it makes it shine much better. I also use it on my face before moisturiser/make-up. I can't see myself ever not using ACV on my hair ever again! love it. Razz
