The world premiere of "Gen Silent," a documentary by filmmaker Stu Maddux about the unique needs and challenges that LGBT elders encounter obtaining safe health and long term care is scheduled for the Boston LGBT film festival on May 8, 2010 at 5 p.m. Additional details are available at http://web.me.com/bob_linscott/LGBTagingproject/Red_Carpet_R eception.html .

The filmmaking team received confirmation that the documentary will be shown at the 2010 New York and Provincetown LGBT film festivals, screening dates and times unknown at present. Entries for other film festivals are pending. Please check the documentary's website for updates as they become available.

A participant and two associate producers of "Gen Silent" are transsexual women.

The premiere of "Gen Silent" is now a "sellout," a week in advance of the date. Tickets are available to the second showing May 11, 2010.

One of the participants in the documentary, the late KrysAnne Hembrough, dealt with the unthinkable. She lost much of her family and many friends while transitioning only to receive a diagnosis of Stage IV lung carcinoma detected during routine pre-op testing for SRS with Dr. Brassard. Tomorrow, May 2, 2010, is the first anniversary of her death. I've viewed clips of Krys' footage and it's an understatement to call them moving and powerful.

The documentary will be entered in other film festivals including non-LGBT exclusive and ones outside North America. Filmmaker Stu Maddux is awaiting word on several entries at the present time.

As I wrote in the original post, if you are interested, please check the film's website for screening information. Updates will be posted as available.

Link to a review of the documentary by Sue Katz:

The caseworker Sue refers to is Jenifer Firestone. Plans are for Jenifer and I to join Stu Maddux on stage for the post-screening discussion of "Gen Silent" at Reel Affirmations 20 (DC LGBT film festival) in October 2010. The documentary was entered in other festivals, confirmation is pending. More information is available at http://www.gensilent.com

"Gen Silent" will be shown on July 17, 2010 at the Golden Rainbow Center in Palm Springs CA. I included the link because it contains one of the last photos of the terminally ill transgender woman, Krys Anne Hembrough, taken before her death.

http://www.grcps.org/articles/GS_07-17-10.html

It's worth mentioning that Krys was very active within the transgender community in the greater Boston area before her health declined. Her terminal illness was not a secret or the importance she placed on participating in the documentary. She was well-known, a member of many social/support groups in the area and quick to open her home for others needing a place to stay. Despite the large number of TG men and women that knew her, only a single individual from the community came forward to assist with her end-of-life care.

Not only was Krys abandoned by her family, she was abandoned by almost all her friends as well. Something for everyone to think about.

Wow, the trailer alone is extremely powerful. Too bad I live on the east coast (when I do get back to the US). Will this be released on DVD in the future?

Hi Allen.

Yes, the documentary will be released on DVD. No information on the date at this time, but many requests already from individuals for a DVD copy when available.

"Gen Silent" has a fan page on Facebook. The link is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gen-Silent/328665826489?ref=ts There's a lot of information and photos.

I met Stu Maddux the filmmaker on December 5, 2008 while I recovered at my friend's house after FFS with Jeffrey Spiegel, M.D. Stu and KrysAnne Hembrough one of the documentary's participants came over for a dinner party that night. After talking with them, I got involved with the documentary and returned to the Boston area (Saugus) in February 2009 to assist with Krys' end-of-life care.

Thank you so much for the information Smile yes I'm very interested myself in obtaining a copy of the DVD so I'll definitely be following up on this.

So many strong LGBT people involved in this project... I am truly awe-inspired and grateful for the chance to chip away at my ignorance - I hadn't even thought about elder LGBT folks and not only the problems they suffer, but how they paved the way for all of us. Hats off to everyone involved in this project, it's an honor. Best wishes to you Catherine Smile

Warm regards,
Allen
